Hudson (Devon 1701–1779 Twickenham)
Portrait of a Lady, traditionally identified as Princess Mary of Great Britain and Ireland, Landgravine of Hesse-Kassel (1722–1772), oil on canvas, 127 x 101.7 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof. Brian Allan, Paul Mellon Institute of British Art, for dating this work to the period around 1730. We also thank Ms. Sarah Moulden of the London National Portrait Gallery for directing our attention to Hudson’s Lady Denison (National Portrait Gallery, London). Ms. Moulden points out that the drapery in our painting might have been done by one of the drapery painters active in the workshops of Hudson or Allan Ramsay, such as Joseph van Aken. The comparison of the present composition to works in the London Witt Library clearly reveals the hand of Hudson, who was praised for his superb treatment of surface textures.
